An introductory course in the types and uses of lubricants in modern industry today. This course focuses on the cooling and sealing actions, corrosion prevention abilities as well as the classifications and functions of lubricants. Properties of oils such as viscosity, flash point, pour point and fire point will also be covered.

Course Outline

  1. Define what lubrication is.
  2. Describe the four forms of lubricants.
  3. Define the characteristics of rolling, static, fluid, and kinetic friction.
  4. Explain how a lubricant reduces wear and dampens shock.
  5. Describe the five major properties of greases.
  6. Explain how viscosity is rated and measured in lubricating oils.
