Course Description

The second of four courses covering lubricants and lubrication in modern industry today. This course focuses on types of additives, boundary and bearing lubrication, multipurpose lubricants and mixed and full-film lubrication. Properties and oil bases of general and special purpose oils, will also be introduced.

Course Outline

  1. Explain how rust and corrosion inhibitors work.
  2. Describe the nature and purpose of pour-point depressants and oxidation inhibitors.
  3. Describe the difference between mixed-film, boundary, and full-film lubrication.
  4. Explain how extreme-pressure additives and detergent-dispersants work.
  5. Describe the purpose of viscosity-index improvers.
  6. Identify common bearing lubrication problems and ways to avoid them.
  7. Name three types of circulating oils and describe their properties. 
  8. Explain the special properties of refrigeration, and internal combustion engine oils.
  9. Compare the characteristics and uses of gear, machine and spindle oils.
