Course Description

This is an introductory course on positive displacement pumps. The course will cover Positive Displacement pump classifications, uses, operation, and performance dynamics, basic trouble-shooting and preventive maintenance techniques.

Course Outline

  1. Explain what is meant by positive displacement.
  2. Identify the differences between positive displacement and centrifugal pumps.
  3. Name the two groups of positive displacement (PD) pumps.
  4. Explain how reciprocating diaphragm pumps works and its output is controlled.
  5. Explain how the rotary type PD pumps works and its output is controlled.
  6. Identify the pump types in each group classed as PD pumps.
  7. Explain the two factors that control delivery rates in PD pumps.
  8. Describe a common cause of loss of pumping efficiency with PD pumps.
  9. Describe the correct method to cut a packing ring.
